Sander Pad Hack

I have a handheld sander that was leaving squiggles in the wood. It was because the sanding pad had compressed and the screws were exposed.

You can buy new pads at the hardware store, which you should, but in a pinch you can use a foam sheet (if you have one). They are sold at art stores in the paper aisle.

Take out the screws to release the sanding pad. Use a marker to mark the parameter on the foam sheet.

Next mark the holes and cut them out. I’ve used a grommet punch before, which is almost exactly the same sized. I can’t find it so I used and exacto.

Use some spray adhesive and apply pressure. Any spray adhesive will work.

You can see here how the foam will give you about an 1/8″ more to work with. Use a punch or an ice pick for the screws.

I can get quite a bit more life out of the sander pad with this hack. I’ve never done 2 layer of foam sheets, but I don’t know why it wouldn’t work.
