I liberally brushed on a coat of Danish finish and let it absorb for 30 minutes and then did a second coat and waited 15 minutes. The grain really shows up now. The corners look decent. From the front, it almost looks like one solid piece of walnut. Not working with a lot of walnut, I expected the grain to raise a little, but it is nearly as smooth as pre-finish. The next step is to mount it, which I hope to do this weekend.

Also, here’s the curly pine box that I mentioned in an earlier post. I’ve cut a scrap piece of walnut from the mantel for the top and bottom inserts. I still need to glue the top in place, sand, and cut the lid.
