I used the hand plane to clean up where the lid meets the body. I am really wanting a disk sander to make these surfaces cleaner and tighter. I’ve been thinking it is probably the next machine I will get, so I might start watching the internet for one.
At any rate, I cleaned it up pretty well with the some sand paper.
I decided the best outcome for this box would be a felt liner. I’ve done one before and it seemed to look best if I created an internal structure with 1/4″ plywood and adhered the felt to it. I knew the felt will fill in the empty space, so I did some good ol’ eye ballin.

I cut the plywood with the band saw and dry fitted them in the box.

I didn’t account for the width of the felt, so I had to cut two of the plywood sections down, which was no big deal.
Before I installed the felt, I needed to seal the catalpa and walnut. I’ve been sticking with the shellac and polyurethane lately; mainly because I need more Danish finish and also because it makes for a great finish.

I’m still impressed with how good the walnut looks. Everyone loves walnut. The catalpa is very nice too.

After the 2nd coat of Miniwax dried, I installed the plywood sections with the felt. There is some trimming to do on the felt yet.

Here’s the box with the lid on the top. i need to sand and buff the top coat a little. After that, I need to mount the hardware and I’m very excited to do that. However…

I’m going to build another box to go inside of this box! I’ve planed down this really nice piece of spalted maple for the inside box.

Next up: spalted maple box for inside the catalpa / walnut box.
